AI Overviews now answer most informational queries without a click. Here is which traffic is actually at risk, which is safe, and how Indian businesses should reallocate.
- The strategic problem. Your impressions are up and your clicks are flat.
- The operating choice. **The counterintuitive part: being quoted is the new ranking.** When an AI Overview answers a question, it cites sources.
- The better model. **The India-specific opportunity.** Most Indian businesses have not adjusted at all — they are still commissioning 'what is digital marketing' blog posts that will never earn a click again.
The strategic problem
Your impressions are up and your clicks are flat. Welcome to zero-click search: Google now answers a large share of informational queries directly in AI Overviews, and the user never visits anyone's website. Industry analyses put the zero-click share for queries that trigger AI Overviews at well over half — and rising. The question for an Indian business is not whether this is happening, but which of your traffic it eats and what to do about it.
**What is actually being eaten.** Informational, top-of-funnel queries — 'what is', 'how to', 'meaning of', generic comparisons. If your traffic depends on definitional blog posts, that traffic is structurally declining and no amount of optimisation brings it back. The answer is read on Google; the click never happens.
**What is not being eaten.** Commercial and transactional intent — 'price', 'cost', 'near me', 'book', 'hire', 'best X in Y'. When money is about to move, people still click, compare and verify. Local and map results are barely touched. Branded searches are safe. The further down the funnel a query sits, the more zero-click-proof it is.
The operating choice
**The counterintuitive part: being quoted is the new ranking.** When an AI Overview answers a question, it cites sources. A cited brand gets the impression, the authority and a share of the clicks that do happen. The goal for informational content is no longer 'rank and get the click' — it is 'be the source the answer quotes'. That means the same disciplines as GEO: answer-first structure, concrete specifics, and facts consistent across the web.
**Reallocate, don't panic.** The rational response is a portfolio shift: fewer generic informational posts, more commercial pages, more original data, more tools and resources that an AI summary cannot replace. A calculator, a benchmark study, a template — these still earn the click because the answer is the thing itself, not a description of it.
**Measure differently.** If you judge content only on sessions, zero-click will look like pure loss. Start tracking branded search volume and direct traffic alongside it. When your informational content is being quoted in AI answers, branded search rises — people see your name in the answer and search for you later. That delayed, branded demand is where the traffic went.
The better model
**The India-specific opportunity.** Most Indian businesses have not adjusted at all — they are still commissioning 'what is digital marketing' blog posts that will never earn a click again. Meanwhile commercial pages in tier-2 and tier-3 cities face thin competition. The reallocation that is painful for publishers is a land-grab for local and niche commercial terms.
**What we tell our own clients.** Audit your content into three buckets: informational that now feeds AI answers, commercial that still earns clicks, and assets that cannot be summarised. Maintain the first bucket cheaply — it buys citations and branded search. Invest heavily in the second and third. And stop paying anyone per-word for content a machine now reads aloud for free.
"The goal is no longer 'rank and get the click' — it is 'be the source the answer quotes'."
